Garden Gurus in Action!
On March 23rd the pupils from 5th Class worked in their groups planting strawberries, potatoes, carrots, onions, turnips and even some wildflowers! Thanks to Kitty Burke and Tidy Towns for supplying us with extra topsoil to 'top-up' the planter tyres. Each group cleared the soil of weeds. There was lots of scutch grass (also known as 'couch grass') and creeping buttercup. The seeds came from chiefly the Incredible Edibles program....sponsored by Agriaware. The pupils will follow up with more planting, with recording growth and with a number of related study modules! Thanks to all involved.
P.S. At one stage a large bumble bee appeared. It had a red bottom and when we researched it we reckon we found it to be a red-tailed bumble bee. Below is a haiku....or short Japanese poem with 17 syllables....about a bee:
Bumble-bee.
Why do you bumble?
Are you unsure what to do
In your stripy suit?
