Let's make Music Project
There is even more music-making and merriment in the corridors of Ardfinnan
National School since September 2011. This is because Merck Sharpe and Dohme
International Neighbour of Choice Programme awarded Ardfinnan N.S. a generous grant to facilitate its ‘Let's Make Music Project'. Due to the success of the project we decided to continue it even when the grant was depleted so now all second class pupils receive free music tuition due to the various fund raising efforts of the school.
Learning music is a very enjoyable experience for children. It affords children an alternative way of expressing their emotions and themselves and enhances their listening skills and self-esteem. Children with a hidden musical talent particularly benefit. Playing music is a life-skill that will benefit not only the individual but society in general as it breaks down barriers and helps social integration.
The violin was chosen as an instrument of choice, as acute listening skills are inherently developed when learning the violin, and the Suzuki method was chosen as it is a fun-learning way.The free years tuition also focuses on teaching basic musical concepts.
Úna Daly-Murphy is the children's music tutor. It is hoped that after one years' tuition, the children will be integrated with the existing school orchestra.
Ardfinnan National School Choir
Pupils from 4th, class in the choir participated in the Peace Proms in Waterford on Feb 10th .It was an amazing experience for everyone.. Ardfinnan N.S. has a proud association with The National Children's Choir since 1985.
The National Children's Choir is a school-based choral experience for primary school children. Pupils from 4th, 5th or 6th class learn a common repertoire of songs in Irish, English or Latin. The repertoire challenges the pupils to perform a broad programme from Bach to the Beatles. The choir enables young people to experience the sheer joy of involvement in music and song.
